Over the past couple months, the Grand Forks rock band The Valiant Nomads have been gaining a wide following in the region. The four piece band consists of David Mau on vocals and guitars, Derek Skogen on bass, Kyle Marcus Nelson on percussion and Matthew Olson on guitar. The band started to form in August 2010 when their first show was played featuring songs from David's previous project "Juno" from Minot. When he moved back to Grand Forks and got a show, he contacted Derek who was his previous guitar tech in Minot to play bass. Derek then moved out to Grand Forks and learned all the songs within a week. The band played for a while as a three-piece with fill-in drummers until they spotted Kyle Marcus Nelson playing with a UND college group and asked him to join the band. He did, and less than a week later they had played five shows in one week with him. He then put the band in contact with Matt Olson, and the band became the four-piece that it is today and played their first show with their current lineup on November 14th at the Battle of the Bands at Grand Fork's empire theatre. The Valiant Nomads are a band with a wide range of influences from Radiohead to All American Rejects and The Who to Lionel Richie. Lead singer David Mau says that "we all try to bring in our influences to the band and work with them, however embarrassing!" David says he also follows the current indie rock scene closely, citing "the intense live shows of Mutemath and Minus the Bear to the ambient sounds of Imogen Heap and Silversun Pickups." With this wide range of influences, it is easy to see why The Valiant Nomads have won over such a large audience in a short time. For such a new band, The Valiant Nomads have been busy hitting the road and sharing their music with concert goers all over the region. While the band plays mostly in towns such as Fargo, Minot and Minneapolis, lead singer David Mau says that they would eventually like to get to more Minnesota towns such as Duluth, Mankato and Rochester. The band also takes any opportunity they get to play their hometown of Grand Forks, whether it be renting out the Empire Theatre or playing a show at the UND Loading Dock. The band is also looking to record a seven song E.P. in the near future in Minneapolis at McPherson studios, and they hope to be able to bring in a producer from either Seattle or Nashville to oversee the project. People interested in hearing The Valiant Nomads will want to check out their Facebook page, although lead singer David Mau suggests that the best way to hear the band is live in concert. "We believe that the performance itself is a part of what we are trying to convey. The one comment that the audience repeats is that they see passion in us, which is a huge compliment. We are dead serious about the life issues and meaning in our music and we want to be a band that offers hope and healing to our fans, not simply a distraction or entertainment," says Mau. The band will be playing a free show at the UND Loading Dock on January 22nd with three other local acts and they're hoping for a great turnout!
