About

We’re Chasing Infinity, a rock/pop-punk band based in Liverpool. Our line up consists of Adele Halsall [vocals], Paul McCormick [guitar], Rob Saunders [bass, harmonica & backing vocals], and Megan Eldred [drums]. We’ve been together for roughly 2 years now. If you happen to hear a tiny hint of something you might one day grow to like, maybe even love and show affection for... Then all we ask is that you make it down to one of our shows and give us a chance to romance you. We try our best to totally bring it to every show and you’ll gain yourself four very appreciative friends. I’m not gonna lie, we are pretty nerdy bunch. We like Star Wars, bad jokes, video games, themed nicknames, beanbag chairs, and the occasional cheesy stage move... All of which can be a lot to come to terms with, we know. But just give us a chance; we aim to please. Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/ChasingInfinityMusic Twitter: http://twitter.com/#!/ch_infinity

  • So Take This Town & Paint It Red (Or Any Colour That You Wanna Choose...)

This week has been a busy and eventful one for ChinFin. Not only did we take part in Liverpool University Band Society's annual Battle of the Bands competition (for which the heats took place last week), we also recorded our first OFFICIAL EP at the weekend, AND went on to WIN aforementioned Battle of the Bands competition!!! I know, right?! Okay, so in the life of an established touring band, all of that probably seems akin to daily routine. (If we could, we'd trade band lifestyles, really truly we would.) But for us, a mere humble student band attempting to build the foundations of a what we would initially hope to be a lucrative future making and enjoying music, it is more than we've ever achieved thus far. Don't get me wrong, we've worked hard over the last two years. I don't really need to go into detail about why - see previous blog post. But we've always kind of felt like the underdogs, in various situations. In fact, we still do at times. I for one sometimes feel like it is hard to be taken seriously as the frontwoman of a band at first, especially if you happen to be on a bill with other all-male bands. The moment when I carried Paul's amp onstage for soundcheck at The Shipping Forecast and was asked by the sound-tech if I was the roadie is just one example of what females in bands have to sometimes deal with (although I realise that they're getting increasing recognition now that their prominence is rising. But still.) When our previous drummer felt it was her time to leave the band, I sought another female drummer specially, because I wanted to retain that aspect of our band, and also avoid being branded as yet-another-Paramore-band (but that is another set of issues entirely). I think we all feel incredibly lucky to have found Meg and have her want to be a part Chasing Infinity. She's now a solid part of our unit and one of our best friends. People also usually have a hard time placing us in their perceptions of the current music industry. We describe ourselves as pop-rock with a punk edge (think Jimmy Eat World crossed with Blink182 occasionally) but I think others in the past have branded us as too cissy, or too happy, or that band that doesn't take themselves seriously. They're right in one sense - we don't take ourselves too seriously because who are we to think that our presence in people's lives is serious? In this ever-changing flux within the industry, nobody can afford to believe that they are doing something entirely new or that they are the best thing since sliced bread and should be worshiped. Everything we are doing has mostly been done before in some shape or form; all we can really do is merge influences and add our own touches. And people are right - we are an upbeat, happy band; not just with our music but in our attitudes. We try to remain positive and help others feel more positive when they watch us at a gig, or listen to our music (and that's not to say we never write a dark song every now and then, either). But some people seem to think this is a bad thing. Tastes and preferences vary, no doubt about that. But in our experience, the city of Liverpool seems to value only certain types or genres of music right now (I won't delve into what I think those are), and unfortunately for us, we aren't a part of it. But along the way we have, just every so often, come across the odd (dare I say it) 'fan' who has claimed to love our music. And each time that happens, we think, "Well we can't be going TOTALLY wrong, surely?" So imagine our surprise when we were told to have won the majority of the audience vote on Thursday night at BandSoc's BotB, despite the astounding amount of people present who seemed to love the metal (we very much felt like we'd lost this ball). Being able to return to The Cavern and play alongside some of our closest fellow bands was great enough; to actually win over an audience which we initially thought would be weighted against us was just amazing. So it is here once again I say thank you on behalf of all of us, to our friends who have always shown their support, the people that voted for us that night and of course the judges that must have showed (at least a little, if not a good amount) of faith in us. We particularly want to say thank you to Jon Lawton from Crosstown Studios who did a great job of producing our EP and is an all-round lovely guy to work with. We hope that anybody reading this will listen to our new EP 'Wasting All My Time' which can be found HERE: http://soundcloud.com/chasinginfinity If you're on SoundCloud, give us a follow! Same for Twitter. 'Like' us on Facebook. And if you like what you see/hear, please spread the word so we may one day have more weeks as fun and fulfilling as this one has been :) Adele x EDIT 26/03/12: Just to clarify, my comment about the judges having "at least a little, if not a good amount" of faith in us was merely me speculating about what thoughts they may have had. I couldn't say for sure how much they liked us or what their exact feelings might have been, as all of their scores are anonymous (and rightly so). I was not by any means referring to any specific score given to us by any of the judges, and it was certainly not a statement of bitterness in any way. I can think of absolutely no reason for us to be bitter or unhappy right now - we're over the moon!

  • Aspirations & Graduations (or: How Much Can We Milk This Song Title For All It's Worth?)

So. It's 2012. A year for all things wonderful, terrible, fantastical and disastrous, all at the same time. Or so they say. For us here in ChinFin, 2012 is bringing about some changes. Both as a band, and as people. (Don't turn away yet! It isn't going to be one of THOSE blog posts...I don't think.) First of all, guitarists Paul and Rob, and myself, will be graduating from university. Yep, that's right. No longer will we be students that get to live in ridiculously low-rent-yet-great-value property, sleep in till noon on a weekday and have an attic space in which to have band practice. Yes, very soon those days will be over. We'll be entering the next chapter of our adult lives. And hopefully that chapter will have just as much music, gigs and fun in it as this one has. What will be next along our life paths? Who knows. All we do know is, we're working our (slightly nervous) fingers to the bone these next few months to make sure people really know what we're about. That is happy, dancey, pop-hooks. There, I just told you. But we want to really SHOW you. That is why you guys can expect our OFFICIAL EP (no more bedroom demos, yaay!) THIS MARCH, 2012. Await the date please. This EP will showcase some of our best stuff to date, giving it the attention it deserves. Since our birth in late 2009, we've progressed significantly, in motivation, song-writing prowess, the blending and experimentation of different styles and of course, as a band dynamic. We aim to improve with every live show we do - maybe one day, just maybe, we'll get to play for longer than 40 minutes? Pretty please? At the moment we have enough material to fill a gut-busting double album. Our songs need homes. So by supporting us and promoting us to your friends, you can help make this happen!!! 2 and a half years have brought us a cumulative lineup of seven official members, and three session stand-ins. Even though our present lineup is down to four, we feel that now is the time we are really getting into our stride. We are coming along in leaps, bounds, skips, hops, jumps and crowd dives. NOW shit is really cookin'. As for our previous members, we thank them wholeheartedly for having been part of the ChinFin family. If it wasn't for those guys, maybe we'd be an even crappier band than we are now. Ha ha ha ha ha. So that's it guys, look out for our EP during the month of March. Just as spring begins, fittingly ;) Make sure you 'like' us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (links are on this page somewhere) to keep up with official dates, such as EP release AND of course, live shows! We have a couple on the horizon for you but nothing shall be revealed until it is all done and definite ;) We'll be rockin' from here to graduation. Adele. x

  • Aspirations and Realisations

I feel powerful. And not just because I apparently have predicted how I feel after last night with a song title I wrote just as the band was in its early stages. Doesn't really feel like two years ago now I think about it... So what happened last night I hear you all asking of me? Chasing Infinity played the Cavern Club, that legendary Liverpool venue that has been home to many a great artist in the past, and more than likely will be for the future also (lol imagine if that was us). 'Alright Rob, don't get big-headed!' Fair play, but I know for me it was a pretty big deal, and I'm fully confident that it was for the other ChinFins too. Yeah, our pictures may not be framed and put on the walls next to Paul McCartney and the likes, but the memory for the time being is more than enough for me. So that's the aspirations part. The realisations bit comes from knowing things. Like just how much I enjoy this at times, both in terms of the playing and being around the three other most awesome people I know. This is all without mentioning the people who genuinely enjoy coming to see us as well. Part of what made my night yesterday evening was being told by one particular gentleman before going on-stage that he was actually excited to see us play. I love doing what I do regardless, but things like that augment that desire just that little bit more. And there's your realisations! So what's next? More gigs I would imagine... But we've personally got our sights set on getting some really nice recordings done fairly soon, so watch this space for upcoming audible treats in the near future. Anyway, I best get off and practice these songs for the student radio tomorrow hadn't I?. Gotta love those guys at BandSoc FM. I'm sure you're all about finished listening to my (admittedly rare bout) of over-sentimentality anyway. Someone fetch me a bucket. YES! DELICIOUS! Rob

  • What does the Scouter say about their Power Level...?

A long time ago in a galaxy... Hang on. That's not quite right. But I guess the reference holds up regardless. Some of you may have noticed a lack of ChinFin prowess as of late; it has been a while since anything super-special-awesome happened to us rag-tag bunch of rebels. I'm not gonna lie to you all, the gigs haven't entirely been landing themselves in our laps. Add to this the fact that we haven't had a proper bass player in quite a while and one might get the impression we were becoming about as useless as Luke Skywalker in the end of Episode V. But Luke Skywalker came back. And by that analogy, it's time for Chasing Infinity Episode VI. But what's new I hear you all asking? Well, where do I begin? How about with the fact that we have been creating new material over the summer that packs more punch than one of Captain Falcon's signature moves? Or that we will be promptly returning to the full line up that gives those songs the renditions they deserve? And I haven't even mentioned the gigs yet. For those who want to come and join in with our super-special-awesome brand of fun, you may want to consider coming to any of these: 13th October: Barcelona Bar, Renshaw Street 15th October: Bier Keller, Stanley Street 22nd October: Static Gallery, Roscoe Lane 13th November: Cavern Club, Mathew Street Yeah, that is the Cavern, possibly Liverpool's most iconic venue. All you gigging veterans who are reading this will probably tell me not to get so excited, but I'm personally very pleased to be able to finally lay claim to having played in such a venue. 'Alright Rob, stop getting so excited. I can't sit here ALL day and be continuously amused by your humour inducing demeanor!' ...Or at least that's (albeit probably very loosely) the response I'm sure to get if I continue on any further. So I'm going curtail myself here. Well, not until I've made it crystal clear that I'm absolutely running ChinFin firmware v.2.0, and I can tell already it's making the system software run as smooth as ever. So, if I may be so bold as to make a request, it's that I see as many of you as possible who've read this to make an effort to come to any number of our gigs. Because I want you to join me in going over the limit, raising my fist at whatever challenge presents itself, and giving it a full-blown Captain Falcon-esque gesture to give me everything it's got, because you know what, right? I like a challenge. COME'AWWN!!! Rob

  • "Hey Chinfin, you caught Infinity yet?" "Nope, still working on it..."

Hello! Our singer wanted the band to have a go at writing some blog posts, so here I am (Paul), giving it a go. :) So, what's new in the land of Chinfin...land? Well, we played a gig last Friday at the Shipping Forecast in Liverpool which turned out to be one of my personal favourites yet, and given the circumstances at the start of the week, that might not have been forseeable due to Meg having trouble getting back up from York and Henry not being able to play his last gig with us (sad times indeed). Luckily, help was at hand, *cue superhero music*, I asked one of my good friends, Mark, if he could fill in for Meg, and given that he's a phenomenal drummer and how well he performed with us at the Masque back in December, I had no doubt that he could get us out of a pickle again this time. As for the missing bassist, our very own Rob switched instruments to schlap the bass, leaving me to mould 2 guitar part songs into 1 part. We've played as a 4 piece at a previous gig in the Bier Keller, which had the instrument filler extraordinare that is Rob filling in on the drums that time. Anyways, after 2 practises, Rob, Mark and me were ready, but oh noes, what about Adele?! She couldn't make practise, so pressure was somewhat in the air, but come Friday night, we did what Chasing Infinity like to think we do best and we just went for it. Needless to say, the results provided me with a smile on my face throughout. :) So, now what do we do? Henry has left the Chinfin family and we shall miss his infectious personality and talent, and I'll personally miss the random jams him and I would break out into in practises. :'( And so, the next step for Chinfin will be an interesting one. I have ideas for how the band can progress next, but we shall see about that... In the meantime, once Rob, Adele and me have our new student house, we can have our own band practise space in there, which will be a great chance to really work on what we have without having to rely on having limited time rehearsals in a booked out practise space. As for new things, I've got some new songs up my sleeve that have 'Chinfin' written all over them, and some other new songs are currently waiting to be Chinfin'd up after Adele, Rob and me jammed them out the other week, and I'm looking forward to playing them, so it hopefully shouldn't be too long that they're ready to be unleashed live. Anyways, we're hoping to record soon, not sure when or what songs yet, but all we know is that we want to get on it! As for gigs, our next gig is 1st September at Shipping Forecast again, so if you're around the Liverpool area, it'd be great to see you there! :D Until the next time, cheerio! Paul x
